Academic recognition of foreign qualifications

The recognition is necessary to continue studies in Latvia or to work in non-regulated professions. You should submit to Academic Information Centre (AIC) originals or certified copies of your educational document and diploma supplement (transcript of records). If necessary, translations and legalization can be asked. AIC evaluates a level of your qualification compared to Latvian educational system and issues its statement. This statement together with educational document should be submitted to the educational establishment or employer. The final decision regarding the recognition of a foreign degree/diploma is taken by higher education institution (in order to continue studies at higher education level) or employer (in order to work in the non-regulated professions). The evaluation made by AIC is free of charge.

According to “Law on Scientific Activity” the equalisation of academic degrees acquired in foreign states shall take place in accordance with international agreements binding on Latvia.

Professional recognition of foreign qualifications

The recognition is necessary to practice it in Latvia if the profession is regulated in Latvia (requires authorization, registration or the equivalent). A person must have rights to practice profession fully and independently in its home country. A person submits to the information institution (as usually AIC): an application; copy of passport; documents approving education and professional rights in profession; certificates. Documents which are not in Latvian should be translated into Latvian. Information institution checks the documents and sends them to the competent body. Competent body takes a decision on recognition, partly recognition or deny of recognition and sends its decision to AIC. AIC forwards the decision to the applicant. The procedure is the same for EU and non-EU qualifications, but the decisions made by competent bodies may differ for EU and non-EU qualifications. The professional recognition procedure is 3-4 months long and is a paid service. The information about regulated professions in Latvia sees in database offered by AIC.
